Apparent Win For Austrian Science

No news is good news for Austria's scientists who were fearing a 90% funding shortfall. After finalizing the budget this week, the Austrian government promises €3.8 billion for university infrastructure, research grants, and academic salaries—a modest 8.4% increase over last year. "Mobilizing the scientific community has worked," says Josef Penninger, director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna, who urged Austrian academics to sign a petition that collected more than 10,000 signatures.
