The United Kingdom's controversial plan to substitute citation analysis and other bibliometric data for peer review in its next Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) apparently hasn't survived its own peer-review proccess. Times Higher Education reports that those planning the next RAE, which may take place in 5 or 6 years, now will use bibliometric data only to inform the evaluations of peer-reviewers. Pilot studies apparently didn't generate much confidence in the new approach. "We just don't think bibliometrics are sufficiently mature at this stage to be used in a formulaic way or, indeed, to replace expert review," one RAE official says.
